What to say in a sympathy card...? ?

When my mom died the one thing I hated to hear was "I'm sorry". It made me feel like I had to say "that's okay", and it wasn't. I definately would use "I'm sorry for your loss". Are they religious? If so, I would suggest a religious card about loss.
